| I love Coheed & Cambria. It's my new Mars Volta, except now I'm in college.
I have work tomorrow morning, and just spent the day at the driving range working on my swing. I will be ridiculously sore in the morning, but it's totally fine with me.
It just hit me today that I'm done with my freshman year of college. Writing for the newspaper made it go by extremely quick, but it's been extremely interesting. I interviewed Mark F. Warner which was my saving grace for Staff Writer (the F stands for "Fucking")!
But enough bullshit. The sudden emanation of summer has invaded my heart and is palpitating like a sweaty raccoon. If that sounds beautiful to you, it's because it is.
Carpe the diem. Seize the carp.
| So the summer is almost here. One painful, blistering week of exams isn't too much to ask from my ragged body, I guess. Apart from the everyday working, the summer is full of little gems. I went crazy, however, with my reading list after visiting the Green Valley Book Fair in Harrisonburg (8 Shakespeares for a nickel?! Yes, please)
The Rules of the Game - Leonard Downie, Jr. Fart Proudly - Benjamin Franklin Me & Orson Welles - Robert Kaplow Dubliners - James Joyce Can't Stop Won't Stop - Jeff Chang
There's a lot of rereads I want to do, because they're so damn good: Great Gatsby Dracula Othello Midsummer Night's Dream Macbeth
As lethargic as I usually am, this is a tall order in an unsurpassed attempt to read a shitload when I don't have much time. If I can get through with this, it will make Adderall users look like they need a Starbucks break after an hour of sleep the night before.
| Who Watches the Watchmen?
It's a simple question, really. Aside from the checks and balances of our representative democracy, is there anyone really watching our government anymore?
Where are the Woodward and Bernsteins? Were we truly waiting on Barack Obama to become our savior, to wipe all the dissonance and senility from our government? It has to be the people's job to do this.
I worry that our generation is truly the most jaded. There's nothing more spoiled than wanting something different, but not putting in the effort to change anything. If our parents' generation were able to see Iraq from their television sets at our age, there would certainly be a mass radicalization. People would have been in the streets, screaming for justice, crying for a purpose.
And that's the America I would like to see again. But we waited for some sort of signal, some change of tide to rise up with a feigned wind of confidence.
My fear is that we will be sinking in a sea of our own filth and oral excrement before we actually get off our couches and pick up a banner, to preach on the street like a shoeless minister with his raggedy Bible.
And I think I may just do that.
| For about the past year, I have become absolutely enthralled with zombies. Their appearance, behavior, eating habits, and, most importantly, their speed.
Answer a question: would you rather have a small, elite group of sprinting, 28 Days Later zombies, or would you rather take the Dawn of the Dead slow-moving, Flood-ish horde? To me, this is an extremely difficult question.
According to both World War Z & The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, the average zombie moves at about 2.7 mi/hr tops. The average walking dead is no pushover (you probably could "push it over", though). The only way to destroy a zombie is to eliminate brain activity. If this estimation proves to be accurate, I would take the horde.
However, several trustworthy sources, such as Left 4 Dead and the 28 series suggest our undead counterparts are much faster than we give them credit for. Apparently, once your muscles deteriorate and rot away after the supposition of reanimation, this classifies you to be Yusain Bolt on crack; however, the weaknesses prevail in their simplicity to kill. Simply a few shots in the chest, head, and/or legs will bring said "Zack" to a standstill.
Of course, I know they are non-existent...as of this moment. Still, the importance of thought is what counts.
